3 Things Aaron Ross Plays

Liquid People – Soul Central – Peven Everett

-
Aaron Ross started buying records back in 1993 and immediately began bedroom DJing for hours on end, landing him a spot on a local pirate radio station. By the age of 15 he was playing at the radio station’s local events and club-nights, which he also helped promote. In the following years Aaron had temporary work placements at various record labels including V-Recordings, Island Records, BMG and most notably Virgin.

In 2000 Phil Asher officially made Aaron a member of his long running, well respected DJ / production crew, Restless Soul and 2 years later, the BBC launched 1xtra, their first digital black music radio station. Aaron was chosen to host the soulful house show every Friday night and only recently has left the station to take care of his label.
Here is his selection for “3 Things People Play”:

Liquid People “Son Of Dragon” (Aaron Ross 2010 Re-Fix)
One of my favourite signings to Soul Heaven records – such a simple track in its original form…And I just had to have a mess around with it! I guess this is somewhere between a re-edit and a remix – I didn’t actually change the arrangement I just added parts – new drums and percussion and a bassline from Mood II Swing legend Lem Springsteen.

Soul Central  “In-Ten-City” (Aaron Ross 2010 Deep Dub)
Another solid record from the back cat, there’s a dope little techy, arpegiatted sound towards the end of the main mix, I was messing around with an edit and I looped up that part as and then as the breakdown was made up of that musical part it was all without drums so I added new beats and worked an arrangement around that techy part. It totally changes the energy of the record and hopefully opens it up to the DJ.s who play that deeper techy sound.

Peven Everett  “Stuck” (Phil Asher’s Soul Heaven Version)
One of my proudest signings and the record that launched the label, a soulful classic with a tight edit from Phil Asher…

soulfulgrooves with Paul Phillips

Paul Phillips love of soul music began in 1978 with the discovery of radio shows such as Greg Edwards and Mike Allen (Capital Radio), Robbie Vincent (Radio London) and the original soul pirate Radio Invicta.

During the early 80s more and more pirate stations started to appear on London’s airwaves playing soul funk and jazz. JFM, Horizon, LWR and Solar while DJs such as Phil Allen continued on Capital Radio. It was at this point that Paul started to take his record collecting more seriously.

In 1982 he decided to start his own pirate radio station and although only small it attracted a cult following around south east London until in 1985 the DTI raided and confiscated the transmitter and studio equipment. By 1986 even more pirate stations had taken to the airwaves of London including Starpoint Fm. One day in October 1986 on hearing a request for new presenters Paul made contact with station manager Carl Lewis and within a few weeks was doing regular shows plus assisting with engineering, using the experience he had gained through running his own station.
Between 1986 and 1990 when Starpoint FM finally ceased broadcasting Paul presented many shows playing the best of the new releases of the day alongside the classics of the 70s and 80s.

After life as a pirate Starpoint Fm went on to broadcast under various RSL’s during the 90’s at Windsor and at the Southport soul weekenders and he continued to be involved in all of these until joining Solar in October 1998.

Over the years Paul has taken a keen interest in all aspects of soul music as well as traveling around the UK and USA trying to hunt down some of those obscure 70s and 80s soul records to play along side the classics.

Basement Freaks on SoundCloud

Here it & Grab it Here:

The multi-talented George Fotiadis, aka Basement Freaks, has been successfully churning out track after funky track for over ten years now with releases on labels such as Jalapeno, Goodgroove and Wack.
His music has a great live sound to it which is quite probably down to the fact that he can play the guitar, bass and drums.

He launched his Basement Freaks project in 2005 and in the space of a year he had an album out on the Greek label Music Kitchen Records which received high praise from the likes of Kraak & Smaak and Stereo MCs. It earned him remix work for acts like Smoove & Turrell, Chris Joss, A.G.F.A and Rephrase.

US label South City Recordings then released his first solo 12″ EP and in the same year he met Quasamodo and began their long and illustrious working career by collaborating with him for a release on Goodgroove which became a top seller and gained them both even more recognition.

Not happy to settle with the steady the stream of releases being notched up next step was to work on a live act and so the Smokey Bandits was born in 2007. Linking up once again with Quasamodo and another 17 musicians he recorded an album of nu-jazz, balcan beats and cinematic musical pieces which got released after 3 years by Klik Records to smash all the Greek indie radio charts.

This was merely a side project though and Basement Freaks have continued to go from strength to strength with releases and remixes on countless labels that have received radio play from the likes of Craig Charles (RadioBBC 6) and Ali B (Kiss FM). Add to this a steady stream of DJing gigs at clubs and festivals all over Greece and Europe and you can see why this guy is big business.

Since late 2008 he has been living Cologne in Germany in order to enhance his career. Same year becomes a member of Bureau45 agency, and co-operate with the radio station “Funkhaus Europa” (of the WDR stable!) As Global Player (Resident Dj of Funkhaus Europa) has toured across NRW.

2010 sees Basement Freaks looking to gain even more exposure and take things to the next level. And how about this for a statement of intent: he has a whole load of tracks waiting to drop and has kicked the year off with not only a promotional mix but also a 10 track booty LP. That’s the way to get yourself noticed!

In Feb 2010 Basement Freaks release the first E.P for Jalapeno Records with the title“Disco Life” The release has been a huge success for the Basement Freaks with some DJs even saying it’s their best release to date. The EP appealed to a wide range of DJs and there was plenty support across the board. The pioneer Producer/Dj of the Nu Skool Breaks scene Rennie Pilgrem gave 9/10 on his review for I-DJ Magazine. Great feedback also has been received from producer/djs such as : Fedde Le Grand, Crystal Method, ATFC, Groove Armanda, Ali B, Plaza De Funk, Freddie Fresh, Fort Knox Five, Groove Diggerz and directly got radio airplays on BBC1 Annie Nightingale show BBC6 Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show & Kiss FM in U.K.

Next record for Basement Freaks is “Jam In The Jungle feat Mc Coppa, one of the most talented Nu skool vocalists/mc to become no1 on Juno Records shop and smash the dj charts with the help of Parker s dubstep mix! The 12 came out from Badboe s label Breakbeat Paradise, was the first release on wax for the label has been sold out!
The summer of 2010 finds George recording a full album with the 2 vocalists of Disco Life Jazzmin & George Perin to come out later this year on Jalapeno Records. This is a Nu born Funk written in the Troutman s grave George Perin screams in the opening song

For just giving you an idea! Add to that a collaboration with the famous Nigerian Afro Rap singer “Ade Bantu” a song that is featuring on the album. One of the most hard working man is the title often used to present George and that s true!

In 2010 George launches BOMBASTIC JAM label and wins the respect of the scene with droping the one release after the other and all original Nu Funk quality tunes just like those that people are used to hear from the Basement Freaks. The label is smashing it only in 3 months get noticed by everyone in the scene and been in charts as well. There is no doubt that there is something new coming and as we get you out we d like to repost what Rennie Pillgrem wrote:
Greece has got the nu-funk massive and leader of the pack is Thessaloniki’s George Fotiadis the man known as Basement Freaks

EduardIsDeep

Eduardisdeep into deep, soulful underground dance music.. house, garage, techno, jazz, disco, funk..

It all started back in ’98, when Eduardisdeep as 10 years young boy was influenced by local dj’s – mixmasters AG & Raitis (Defekts), Bogdan Taran (DanceBox), also BBC Radio 1 (Essential Selection etc) translations on local radio Super FM were available. So every weekend was spent listening to those radio shows.

For many years Eduardisdeep musical taste was influenced by radio and TV. Kind of turning point was in 2005, when he started to search house music resources through the internet and quickly found ‘he’s thing’.

Since 2006 Eduardisdeep collecting and spinning records – best part contains records from Chicago, Detroit and NY artists, such as Glenn Underground, Rot Trent, Anthony Nicholson, Alton Miller, Omar S, JoVonn, Kerri Chandler and so on…
