“There was a growing digital demand for our own music, which we were watching be filled by pirate sites, and the current distribution networks were saying real DJs play vinyl and we knew we needed to do something,†Tappert tells DJ mag Canada. (more…)
Southport 50th was always going to be special. Every year Southport Weekender comes around again and with so many mind blowing gigs and sets we’ve seen throughout its history,  it would be fair to assume Alex, Dave and the rest of the Southport Weekender family couldn’t top it off again, but my gosh they did! It was an epic weekender.Â
The history of Southport Weekender has been inspirational to many lovers of soul and unity. That’s why so many American artists, who have influenced dance music, always return back to get a slice of this unique melting pot. David Morales, Derrick Carter, Kerri Chandler, Kenny Dope, Jazzy Jeff, as well as legendary UK pioneers such as Carl Cox, David Rodigan, Trevor Nelson, Giles Peterson, Norman Jay and Mr Scruff were all in the house.  Amazing live acts such as Faith Evans, Omar, Marcos Valle and Snarky Puppy added to the magic of what was a fantastic weekend. (more…)
Have you ever awoken from a dream with a melody in your head?
An idea might be vivid when it first comes to you, but if you can’t express it, it fades away…
imitone is an app for PC and Mac which transforms your voice into musical notes, live.  As you sing — or whistle, or hum — imitone instantly converts the sound into “MIDI signals” which can control almost any music software or digital instrument. (more…)
On any given Tuesday in the 90s, I would hustle to the record shop after school to gawk at the new releases. Occasionally, I would take a CD home, greedily tear it open, pop it into my boombox, and listen while I pretended to do my homework. This wonderful experience has no value any more. It’s obsolete.
Listening to music is still amazing today, it’s just that you’d be crazy to buy a CD. That’s not me saying that: That’s what the whole world is saying. CD sales have been declining every year for more than a decade because CDs are effectively useless in a world where digital music files are so easy to play and transfer, legally or otherwise. (more…)
Remember Twitter Music? Probably not. The ill-fated recommendation service started as We Are Hunted, which was a great independent service until Twitter bought it, tanked its music ambitions, and killed it. Now there’s a rumor Twitter has its roving eye on SoundCloud. We really hope history isn’t about to repeat itself. (more…)
Moog just trotted out a new version of its popular Sub Phatty synth that’s got a braille overlay to help the visually impaired. It’s hard to believe it took the legendary manufacturer this long to get around to it, especially given that it’s actually a pretty simple modification to the panel’s design. (more…)
SoundcLash Round 3 is on – Friday 30th May. We return to the Prince of Wales (upstairs) for another showdown – the Guyz vs the Galz. Will it be a hatrick; three in a row for the women’s team for a resounding 3-0 defeat? Or, do the men have it in them to upset things to bring themselves back from beyond?Â
Team captains Kaidi Tatham (2000Black) and Marcia Carr (TMP / The Ladyzâ„¢) respectively are joined by some cutting edge guest selectors who bring something that bit special to the cLash.
DJ EXpression[s] from London’s Broadcite and Lazer Kru camps injects his cool selection of dubplates into the mix for the night. From Amsterdam, Kc The Funkaholic (Kindred Spirits) flies over to add a continental edge to his ammunition of black vinyl biscuits.
On the opposite team dear Katie Barber is away for this party, but standing in for her is the expedient and sassy Lynda Phoenix. Also, from the Broadcite crew ‘The Assassin’ as Lynda is known on the set is most adept and versatile. T. Maronie will be on hand to compress down that deceptive hype and bravado of our male dj peers. Like Marcia DaVinylMC, she let’s the music she plays speak volumes – we are all ready and plan to take down our opponents in pretty fashion.
You’re support friends has thus far been inspiring – we feel the passion and thank you all for it.
Do come along to show us all even more of that happy feeling and love on Friday 30th May.
10pm is kick off.
Dancers get there early to mark your floor spot with your shapes and us DJs carry you right through until 4am.
