Incognito’s 30th anniversary album TRANSATLANTIC RPM is an absolute masterpiece. It’s like no other Incognito album you have heard before.
16 tracks with a host of special guests including Chaka Khan, Mario Biondi, the legendary Leon Ware, Al McKay of Earth Wind & Fire, Christian Urich of Tortured Soul, Ursula Rucker, and Los Angeles rapper Luckyiam.
Regular Incognito vocalists Maysa, Joy Rose, Tony Momrelle and Vanessa Haynes are all featured. Airplay favourites are the band’s excellent version of Boz Scaggs’ “Lowdownâ€, with vocals by Chaka Khan and Mario Biondi, and “1975â€, the story of Bluey’s introduction to jazz and soul music, with stunning vocals by Joy Rose. The album is an Album of the Week on Jazz FM.
The enduring success of Incognito is one of the great stories of UK music during the last 31 years. Look at the recent history of soulful UK artists and you will find any number of short-lived acts that have achieved pop success. Narrow the list to those that have created a uniquely British sound and that have endured as a global phenomenon on their own terms and the list becomes short. Dues, then, to Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick and Incognito, formed in 1979 and celebrating 31 years of positive vibes and undiluted jazz funk in 2010.
From an early age, the UK live scene was a key inspiration for Bluey, having moved to London from his native Mauritius aged ten. Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, of course, Santana, Earth Wind & Fire, Kool & The Gang. But the real link to Incognito was UK bands like Gonzalez and FBI. These were people that lived in your town and walked your streets.
31 years on, the Bluey and Incognito story remains a one-off and a uniquely Great British adventure. From Top Ten hits to producing and arranging for Chaka Khan, Anastacia, Lulu, Philip Bailey and George Benson, Bluey Maunick can take his place among the greats of global soul. Its a wonderful time for music. Bluey quotes; We are entertainers, teachers, healers, we are lucky to have this labour of love and to be living the dream.
Please note advance tickets for this event are not available from the venue box office. Advance tickets for other events are available unless stated otherwise.
Please note this is a 14+ show.
An acid jazz project with surprisingly deep roots in the 1970s jazz/funk/fusion world, Incognito was originally formed by Jean-Paul Maunick (aka Bluey) and Paul “Tubbs†Williams. Both were leaders of the late-’70s disco-funk group Light of the World, who scored several moderate British hits, including a cover of “I Shot the Sheriff.†Just after the release of Light of the World’s third LP (Check Us Out), Maunick and Williams shifted the lineup slightly and renamed the conglomeration Incognito. Incognito debuted with the single “Parisienne Girl†and released the 1981 LP Jazz Funk, but was inactive during the rest of the 1980s. Maunick continued to write material for his group, even while working with Maxi Priest and others. (Williams later moved to Finland.) By the beginning of the 1990s, DJ legend and early Incognito fan Gilles Peterson had founded the Talkin’ Loud label and he made Incognito one of his first signings. The 1991 single “Always There†(with vocals by Jocelyn Brown) became a Top Ten hit as part of Britain’s booming acid jazz scene, prompting the release of Incognito’s second album overall, Inside Life. It was largely a studio affair, with Maunick and engineer Simon Cotsworth directing a large cast with many of the best musicians in Britain’s fertile groove community. With 1992’s Tribes Vibes + Scribes, Maunick added a more established vocalist, the American Maysa Leak. A cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing†became another Incognito hit …

Plan B is one of South London’s best kept secrets and a staple for the area’s clubbing for almost nine years. Since the re-launch of the club in 2009 (which included fitting a state of the art, no expense spared Funktion 1 sound system in both rooms) Plan B has put on a succession of high quality events, featuring the outputs of emerging underground talent and international DJs alike, offering a unique space for clubbing in Brixton.
From now on Saturdays at Plan B will become a platform for innovative and retrospective forms of house, techno, disco and other electronics.
Launching on Saturday 18th September 2010, in conjunction with FACT Magazine, we welcome a rare set from Detroit producer and disco aficionado Moodymann (this will be his only London date until early 2011) and accompanying him, the jewel in Eglo Records’ crown – Floating Points. Community promises to redefine the scene in Brixton and South London as a whole with a fresh, in-house perspective on how Saturdays nights in one of the most musically rich and forward thinking cities in the world, should sound like.
We are aiming to reunite the best homegrown talent in South London, whilst accommodating some of the world’s finest DJs, bringing about a return of the underground spirit and affinity for the area that has been so strong in the past.
Forthcoming guests include the likes of Jamie Jones, Todd Terje, Sebo K and Greg Wilson, with lots more to be announced in the coming weeks and months!
