First Word are back for another Excursions session after February’s sold-out event. Joining FW label boss and resident DJ Gilla is the legendary Marc Mac. Along with Dego, Marc founded the seminal UK act 4hero, pioneers of the drum ‘n’ bass and breakbeat scenes, later going on to incorporate jazz, soul and broken beat into their sound. Marc has also produced several albums under other aliases, including Nu Era (soulful techno), Manix (hardcore) and Visioneers (jazzy Hip Hop). His DJ sets are equally varied, taking in soul, jazz, hip hop, drum n bass, broken beat and more. A true UK legend, this is a show not to be missed. As ever resident Gilla will dropping all manner of beats, soul, hip hop and beyond, aided and abetted by Bopperson of Wah Wah 45s & Parisian radio station Le Mellotron.

Marc Mac is better known as one half of 4hero, the duo that founded legendary drum & bass label Reinforced Records and changed the shape of UK electronic music. Production credits include tracks for Jill Scott, Vikter Duplaix, Ultra Nate, Terry Callier, Ursula Rucker, and Shaun Escoffery to name a few and he has a long list of remixes under his belt from Masters At Work to John Coltrane.
DJ Gilla is the founder / A&R for First Word Records, home to Tall Black Guy, Souleance, Yosi Horikawa, kidkanevil, Essa, Quiet Dawn, Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra and many more. Originally starting out in club promotion he ran seminal clubnights Funky Mule and New Bohemia in his adopted city of Leeds for many years, running shows for a host of acts including Roots Manuva, Bonobo, Nightmares On Wax, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Benji B, Gilles Peterson and Flying Lotus. As a DJ he’s built a reputation for his eclectic and floor-filling sets taking in soul, beats, hip hop, jazz and beyond.
Bopperson shows a passion for deep funky grooves, and a slick mixing style that has helped him earn his reputation as a sure fire party starter! Described as â€œa demon on the decksâ€ heâ€™s already shared bills with artists including Huey Morgan, Plan B and Norman Jay MBE, right through to the likes of Theo Parrish, Jazzanova and Blues Brother Dan Akroyd!
